● Chemical Properties
Two types of replacement are probable for the xylene compounds. The more reactive part is methyl groups and ring hydrogen is less susceptible to attack. Hydrogen present in the methyl group readily interacts with free radicals and forms various compounds like xylene dichlorides, and xylene bromide whereas electrophilic attack occurs on ring hydrogen and produces chloro- and nitroxylenes.

Propionic Acid

Production of Xylene

Xylenes are produced by the methylation of toluene and benzene. Commercial or laboratory-grade xylene produced usually contains about 40–65% of m-xylene and up to 20% each of o-xylene, p-xylene and ethylbenzene. The ratio of isomers can be shifted to favor the highly valued p-xylene via the patented process or by transalkylation of xylene with itself or trimethylbenzene. These conversions are catalyzed by zeolites.

Acidity of Phenol

The acidity of phenol is weaker than carboxylic acids but stronger than alcohols. Due to resonance, the oxygen atom of the hydroxyl group acquires a positive charge. Therefore, it can facilitate the release of the proton.

productcate-828-300

The acidity of C2H5OH is also explained by the stability of the phenoxide anion. The phenoxide ion has also resonance structures. It is more stabilized by resonance than the un-ionized C2H5OH molecule due to the spreading of the negative charge.

FAQ

Q: What is the use of xylene?

A: It is primarily used as a solvent (a liquid that can dissolve other substances) in the printing, rubber, and leather industries. Along with other solvents, xylene is also widely used as a cleaning agent, a thinner for paint, and in varnishes.

Q: What are the hazardous properties of xylene?

A: The hazard statements are:
Flammable liquid and vapour.
Causes skin irritation.
Suspected of damaging fertility or the unborn child.
May cause drowsiness or dizziness.
May be fatal if swallowed and enters airways.

Q: What happens when you mix xylene and water?

A: Xylene does not mix well with water; however, it does mix with alcohol and many other chemicals. Most people begin to smell xylene in air at 0.08–3.7 parts of xylene per million parts of air (ppm) and in water at 0.53–1.1 ppm.

Q: What can xylene dissolve?

A: Xylene is commonly used as a paint solvent because it's excellent at removing old paint on a variety of surfaces. It's also effective at removing greasy stains, resins, enamels, and glue.

Q: What is the use of propionic acid?

A: Propionic acid is a chemical compound used to help preserve and flavor cheeses and baked goods, like breads and tortillas. It's also used as an antifungal and antibacterial gents in agricultural and livestock operations. For instance, it's used as a surface sanitizer in places where grain is stored.

Q: Is propanoic acid a strong acid?

A: Is propanoic acid a strong acid? Propanoic acid, like most organic acids, is a weak acid. Its Ka value 1.3*10^-5 mol/L.

Q: What does propionic acid smell like?

A: The esters of propionic acid have fruit-like odors and are sometimes used as solvents or artificial flavorings. In biogas plants, propionic acid is a common intermediate product, which is formed by fermentation with propionic acid bacteria.

Q: What is the pH of propionic acid?

A: A 0.20 mol/L solution of propionic acid has a pH of 2.79.
