● Chemical Properties
Two types of replacement are probable for the xylene compounds. The more reactive part is methyl groups and ring hydrogen is less susceptible to attack. Hydrogen present in the methyl group readily interacts with free radicals and forms various compounds like xylene dichlorides, and xylene bromide whereas electrophilic attack occurs on ring hydrogen and produces chloro- and nitroxylenes.

Xylenes are produced by the methylation of toluene and benzene. Commercial or laboratory-grade xylene produced usually contains about 40–65% of m-xylene and up to 20% each of o-xylene, p-xylene and ethylbenzene. The ratio of isomers can be shifted to favor the highly valued p-xylene via the patented process or by transalkylation of xylene with itself or trimethylbenzene. These conversions are catalyzed by zeolites.
The acidity of phenol is weaker than carboxylic acids but stronger than alcohols. Due to resonance, the oxygen atom of the hydroxyl group acquires a positive charge. Therefore, it can facilitate the release of the proton.


The acidity of C2H5OH is also explained by the stability of the phenoxide anion. The phenoxide ion has also resonance structures. It is more stabilized by resonance than the un-ionized C2H5OH molecule due to the spreading of the negative charge.
