From denatured ethanol to isopropanol, alcohols vary by type and application. Generally speaking, alcohols are chemicals derived from sources such as natural gas and petroleum. They can be blended and modified for industrial and commercial uses. Alcohols typically fall into one of four major categories: methanol, ethanol, isopropyl alcohol and glycerol.

Our Best-Selling Alcohol Products
Ethylene Glycol
Ethylene glycol is used as a precursor for the syntheses of polymers like polyester fibers, resins and polyethylene terephthalate, which finds application in making plastic bottles. It acts as an intermediate in the synthesis of 1,4-dioxane. It plays an important role in organic synthesis as a protecting group for carbonyl groups. It is a useful desiccant due to its high boiling point and affinity towards water. Its major application is as a medium for convective heat transfer in automobiles and liquid cooled computers.
95%Ethanol
Ethyl alcohol, iso-propyl alcohol and n-propyl alcohol possess very good disinfectant properties in the range of 60–90% solutions with water. They are considered intermediate-level disinfectants, effective against vegetative bacteria, enveloped viruses, and some fungi and mycobacteria, including M. tuberculosis.
Phenolics or quaternary ammonium compounds are added at levels under 1% in this application. Alcohols can also be used as cosolvents in pine oil or phenolic formulations that bloom, or emulsify rapidly, upon dilution in water.
Methanol
Methanol appears as a colorless fairly volatile liquid with a faintly sweet pungent odor like that of ethyl alcohol. Completely mixes with water. The vapors are slightly heavier than air and may travel some distance to a source of ignition and flash back.
Methanol is released to the environment during industrial uses and naturally from volcanic gases, vegetation, and microbes. Exposure may occur from ambient air and during the use of solvents.
N-Butanol
Butanol usually refers to the straight-chain isomer with the alcohol functional group on the terminal carbon, which is also known as 1-butanol. The straight chain isomer with the alcohol at an internal carbon is sec-butyl alcohol or 2-butanol.
Butanol is used as a solvent for a wide variety of chemical and textile processes, in organic synthesis, and as a chemical intermediate. It is also used as a paint thinner and a solvent in other coating applications where a relatively slow evaporating latent solvent is preferable. It is also used as a component of hydraulic and brake fluids.

Alcohol Synthesis Methods

There are many methods of obtaining alcohols. For industry purposes, they are most often obtained using the following reactions:
● Direct hydration of alkenes
● Synthesis of alkenes using the hydroxymercuration method
● Synthesis of alkenes using the boron hydrogeneration method
● Reaction of halogen alkanes with hydroxide ions
Methanol, ethanol and polyhydroxide alcohols, such as ethylene glycol and glycerol, are most commonly produced on an industrial scale.
Methanol was historically produced by wood distillation. Thus, the produced alcohol is called wood alcohol. At present, methanol is produced using the synthetic reaction of catalytic hydrogenation of carbon monoxide. The entire process is conducted at increased pressure, at a temperature of 300-400°C.
Ethanol is commonly produced through the alcoholic fermentation of raw materials with sugar content (plant raw materials with starch content). The substrate is transformed to proper form, which may be subjected to alcoholic fermentation. The produced mash is stripped of ethanol. The final stage is distillation, which produces distillate with 80–90% ethyl alcohol content.
Polyhydroxyl alcohols are compounds, among which the most prominent are ethylene glycol, propylene glycol and glycerin. Ethylene and propylene glycol are produced in the epoxies hydrolysis process. Glycerin is a by-product of the hydrolysis of fats and polypropylene or acrolein.
Chemical production solvent
Alcohol is one of the key solvents used in the manufacture of many chemicals. Since it is polar, it is a solvent for many organic compounds, hence the implicit use thereof in the following stages:
● Paints and coatings
● Adhesives
● Ink
Pharmaceutical and medical use
Alcohol can be very central to the pharmaceutical world where it is required for:
● Sanitization
● Extraction and purification
● Preparation of drugs
Food and beverage industry
Although denatured ethanol should not be consumed, industrial alcohol is utilized to be in many different forms of food products:
● Flavoring agents
● Preservatives
Cosmetics and personal care products
Alcohol is the generic term for a wide variety of cosmetic and personal care products, including:
● Skin care products
● Perfumes
Fuel and energy
Ethanol is increasingly being accepted as a renewable fuel. Its applications in this direction are as follows:
● Biofuel
● Fuel additive
Industrial cleaning
Alcohol can be used in the cleaning industry since it can easily remove dirt and grease as well as some impurities. Some uses of industrial alcohol include:
● Surface cleaners
● Degreasers

Low boiling alcohols can be stored in carbon steel tanks. These low boiling alcohols include methanol, ethanol, propanol, isopropanol, butanol, isobutanol, and primary amyl alcohol. Aluminum tanks should never be used for storing alcohols with very low water content.
In order to exclude air, nitrogen or any dry inert gas should be provided to the tank's vapor space. Water contamination of the alcohol will be avoided since this process prevents the pickup of moisture from air.
Alcohols that contain five or more carbon atoms per molecule or higher aliphatic alcohols can be stored in carbon steel tanks, aluminum, stainless steel, galvanized or tinned iron, and nickel.
These alcohols have a low freezing point, thus it is not normally required for heated storage.
The material used for the tank can be used for the transfer lines. Transfer service can use a centrifugal pump. Nitrile or EDPM is compatible with gaskets.
In the event of exposure to alcohol, the following steps should be taken to prevent serious health hazards:
Eye Contact
Remove contact lenses if present. Flush eyes with water or a regular saline solution for at least 20 minutes and seek medical attention.
Skin Contact
Remove and isolate all contaminated clothing and wash skin thoroughly with soap and water. Seek medical attention if skin irritation or redness occurs.
Inhalation
The affected individual should be removed from the area immediately and brought into fresh air. Seek medical attention immediately if any breathing problems are present.
Ingestion
If victim is conscious, give 1-2 glasses of water to dilute the alcohol. Do not induce vomiting, as there is risk of the chemical being aspirated into the lungs while vomiting. Seek medical attention immediately.
