China Chemical News reported on September 29 that, according to China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC), China has made a major breakthrough in the exploration of Paleogene lithology in the Liaozhong Depression of the Bohai Bay Basin, successfully drilling high-yield oil and gas wells, further strengthening the country's offshore oil and gas resource reserves.

The Liaozhong Depression is located in the northern sea area of the Bohai Sea, with an average water depth of 22 meters. Exploration well JZ27-6-3 encountered an oil and gas layer at 57.4 meters and was completed at a depth of 1,925 meters. Tests showed that the well produces about 500 tons of crude oil per day and about 20,000 cubic meters of natural gas per day.

It is understood that the oil and gas reservoirs in this area have complex structures, and there have been no large-scale exploration discoveries over the years. Researchers from China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) have continuously tackled technical challenges, conducted multidisciplinary joint studies, established the coupling relationship between sediments and uplifts, and innovatively proposed the dominant migration model of Paleogene lithologic bodies. This has solved the scientific research problem of the difficulty in forming large-scale Paleogene lithologic reservoirs, pinpointed areas rich in lithologic oil and gas reservoirs, and achieved breakthroughs in exploration.

Xu Changgui, Chief Geologist of CNOOC, stated that CNOOC continues to advance the "succession exploration project" for mature oil fields, focusing on new strata and new types of technical research around existing oilfields. The significant breakthrough in exploring Paleogene lithology in the Liao Zhong Depression confirms the enormous exploration potential of Paleogene lithological oil and gas reservoirs in the Bohai Bay Basin, promotes the secondary exploration of mature oil regions, and also provides a replicable technical approach and practical experience for exploration in similar areas of China's offshore regions.

In recent years, China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) has successively made major discoveries of various types of medium- and large-sized Paleogene oil and gas fields in multiple sea areas, continuously enriching China's offshore oil and gas resource reserves. The new exploration discovery in the Liaozhong Depression is of great significance for ensuring a stable energy supply for the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and the Bohai Rim.
